Futsal History
Futsal is a game that originated in the streets of Brazil. It is the only official five-a-side
indoor soccer game endorsed by FIFA. Futsal is a small-sided soccer game (5v5 including
the goalkeepers) played an a field roughly the size of a basketball court. The game does not
use dasher boards (side or back walls) like traditional American indoor soccer. Instead, the
game is played with touchline boundaries. The official ball is a special low bounce ball, heavier
and smaller than an official size 5 soccer ball. Because of its low momentum, the
ball is designed to force a player to use skill rather than the ball's own "bounce" to propel it.
Moreover, because players cannot rely on using the walls to escape tough situations,
they are forced to use ball and passing skills. One touch passing becomes essential
to maintain ball possession in such tight spaces.
Overall, players who participate in the game will develop quicker reflexes, faster thinking,
and pinpoint passing.
